Tolowa Dunes State Park

State Park · Crescent City, California

Tolowa Dunes State Park lies in Del Norte County in the far northwest corner of California, just north of Crescent City and close to the Oregon line. It protects a broad mix of coastal dunes, beach, wetlands and forest around Lake Earl and Lake Talawa, two shallow coastal lagoons that fill and drain with the seasons and the Smith River delta nearby. The place is raw and undeveloped, and it is best known for birdwatching: migratory ducks, geese, swans and shorebirds use the lagoons in huge numbers in fall and winter. There are hiking and horse trails through sand and brush - confirm the layout - but few signs and little shade. Wind, fog and cold water are constant, and swimming is a poor idea. The park is a good quiet counterpoint to the Redwood National and State Parks nearby, and it suits patient, self-sufficient visitors rather than a sightseeing crowd. Plan on a few hours, with a warm layer.

The park is a day-use area with no staffed gate or ticket booth, and State Parks has generally treated it as open from about sunrise to sunset - confirm the current hours and which access roads are open. The best hours are set by the birds and the weather: waterfowl are most active in early morning and late afternoon, wind often picks up by midday on the dunes, and summer fog can sit on the coast until noon or later. Tides and lagoon levels change which trails are dry. Some wetland areas have seasonal rules, especially during waterfowl hunting season in fall and winter, which affect access and safety - confirm zones and dates with State Parks and the Department of Fish and Wildlife before you go.
