Tombstone

National Historic Landmark District · Tombstone, Arizona

A silver-mining town founded in 1879 in the high desert of south-east Arizona, made famous by the thirty-second gunfight near the O.K. Corral in October 1881 between the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday and the Clanton and McLaury faction. Its boardwalked Allen Street, closed to cars in the historic core, is lined with saloons, the 1881 Bird Cage Theatre and the office of the Tombstone Epitaph newspaper, and daily re-enactments stage the gunfight. Boothill Graveyard and the 1882 courthouse, now a state historic park, complete the story. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark District. Wyatt Earp Days in May and Helldorado Days in October draw the biggest crowds.
