Tonder and Mogeltonder

Marsh Towns By The German Border: Tonder, Known For Lace And A Folk Festival, And Mogeltonder, A Lime Tree Avenue Of Thatched Houses Leading To Schackenborg Castle · Tonder, Region of Southern Denmark

Tonder and Mogeltonder are two small marsh towns in the far south-west of Jutland, a few kilometres from the German border and the Wadden Sea. Tonder is said to be one of Denmark's oldest chartered market towns, with a charter usually dated to 1243; it grew rich in the 1600s and 1700s on bobbin lace made by thousands of women in the district, and its main street, Storegade, still shows gabled merchants' houses with carved bay windows. Today it is best known for the Tonder Festival, a big folk and roots music festival held roughly in late August. Four kilometres west, Mogeltonder is a single lime-tree avenue, Slotsgade, of cobbles and thatched brick houses running from a richly painted village church to Schackenborg Castle, long linked to the Danish royal family. People come for the old-town calm, the lace and design history, the festival and the marsh around it, where starling murmurations called the black sun are sometimes seen. The honest caveat: both towns are small and quiet, far from Copenhagen, and the castle interior is mostly not open.

The streets of both towns are open at all times and free. Museums in Tonder (the cultural-history museum, the art museum and the Wegner tower) usually keep daytime hours, often closed on Mondays, with longer summer hours and shorter winter ones - confirm the current schedule. Schackenborg's interior is generally not open; the castle garden and occasional summer guided tours may be - confirm. From Copenhagen it is roughly 4-4.5 hours by train (change at Esbjerg or Bramming for the local Tonder line) or roughly 3.5 hours by car over the Great Belt Bridge, a toll bridge. Local buses link Tonder and Mogeltonder, but a bike or car is easier. Book festival tickets and beds months ahead.
