Tonto National Forest
National Forest · Phoenix, Arizona
The largest national forest in Arizona, wrapping the north and east of the Phoenix area from Sonoran desert to the pine forest of the Mogollon Rim, and one of the busiest in the country because millions of people live next to it. It holds the Salt River and its reservoirs — Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Theodore Roosevelt lakes — the Superstition and Mazatzal wildernesses, Fossil Creek with its turquoise pools, the Salt River wild horses and the forests around Payson. Summer heat in the desert sections is deadly, and a Tonto Pass is required at many sites. On summer weekends its rivers and lakes near Phoenix are extremely busy, and lots can close when full.
