Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
Municipality Of Anchorage Trail · Anchorage, Alaska
A paved trail of about 11 miles along the shore of Cook Inlet, from Elderberry Park in downtown Anchorage past Westchester Lagoon, Earthquake Park and Point Woronzof to Kincaid Park on the city's western edge, named after the former mayor and governor Tony Knowles. Cyclists, runners, walkers and in winter cross-country skiers use it for views across the mudflats to Mount Susitna and, on clear days, Denali. Moose often wander onto the trail, especially near Kincaid Park, and planes roar overhead near the airport at Point Woronzof. Earthquake Park explains the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake, which destroyed a neighbourhood here. Bike rentals are available downtown. Coastal erosion has been a problem: in 2024 a section near Point Woronzof was closed, with riders detouring via Northern Lights Boulevard, so it is worth checking for detours.
Elderberry Park, 2nd Avenue and N Street (downtown trailhead), Anchorage, Alaska, 99501, United States
Open year-round; lit in some sections. Check the Municipality of Anchorage for closures and erosion detours.
