Torysh Valley of Balls

A Valley Of Balls Where Spherical Sandstone And Limestone Concretions, Some Metre Wide, Lie Scattered Over A Plain Among Exposed Fossils. Visited As A Stop On The Mangystau Desert Circuit. · Shetpe, Mangystau

Torysh is a shallow valley in Mangystau where round stone concretions, some the size of a football and some more than a metre across, lie scattered over a dry plain. They formed slowly inside sandstone and limestone on an old sea floor, were left behind when the softer rock around them wore away, and sit among exposed fossils such as shells and sea creatures. It is odd and photogenic, but be honest: it is small. Most visitors spend thirty minutes to an hour, and it works as a stop on the desert circuit rather than a reason to travel by itself. It lies about 250 km from Aktau by dirt track and is nearly always combined with Bozzhyra and Beket-Ata in a two- or three-day 4WD loop. There is no water, shelter or signal. The balls and fossils are fragile and part of the landscape, so look and photograph but do not chip, roll, take or climb on them. Summer is very hot, so go early or late in the day.

There are no gates, staff or opening hours. Torysh is open ground in the desert and can be visited at any time of day, though you will usually arrive as part of a driver's circuit, often in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is low and the heat is easier. Light is best for photos early or late. There is no ticket office; any fee for the area is normally included in the operator's price. Short winter days and wet tracks after rain can change the plan, so confirm timing and conditions with your driver.
