Tower Station and U-Drop Inn

Historic Site · Shamrock, Texas

An Art Deco filling station and café built in 1936 at the Route 66 crossroads in Shamrock, its two green-and-gold towers rising out of flat Panhandle nowhere like something dropped from a city. It was reportedly sketched out in the dirt with a nail, it is one of the most photographed buildings on the whole road, and it was the model for Ramone's body shop in the film Cars.

1242 North Main Street, Shamrock, Texas, 79079, United States

The building stands on a public street corner and the exterior — which is the attraction — is FREE and available at any hour. ⚠ IT NOW OPERATES AS A VISITOR CENTRE AND GIFT SHOP, but I COULD NOT VERIFY INTERIOR HOURS; check with the City of Shamrock before relying on it being open. ⚠ COME AT DUSK: the neon on the towers is lit and it is a completely different building from the one you see at midday.
