Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness
Wilderness Area, Tongass National Forest · Juneau, Alaska
A wilderness of deep fjords about 45 miles south of Juneau in Tongass National Forest, protected in 1980. Tracy Arm winds about 30 miles between granite walls rising thousands of feet, past waterfalls and icebergs, to the twin Sawyer Glaciers, while neighbouring Endicott Arm ends at Dawes Glacier. Fords Terror, a narrow side fjord, is named after a crewman who rowed in at slack tide in 1889 and was trapped for hours by violent tidal currents. Harbor seals raise pups on floating ice, and mountain goats, bears and humpback whales are often seen. Most visitors come on full-day boat tours from Juneau, which in 2026 cost about $329-$349 for adults. Floating ice often blocks Tracy Arm, so many departures go to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier instead.
