Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

Historic Site · Weston, West Virginia

A Kirkbride-plan asylum built in hand-cut sandstone between 1858 and 1881, its construction interrupted by the Civil War, with a main building around a quarter of a mile long that is claimed to be the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America. Designed for 250 patients, it held nearly ten times that number by the 1950s. It closed in 1994, was bought privately in 2007 and now runs history tours by day and paranormal tours by night.
