Trapholt

Museum Of Modern Art, Design And Crafts On Kolding Fjord, Opened In 1988, With Danish Chairs And Arne Jacobsen'S Prototype Kubeflex Summer House · Kolding, Region of Southern Denmark

Trapholt is a museum of modern art, design and crafts on the north shore of Kolding Fjord, on the edge of Kolding in south-east Jutland. It opened in 1988 in a long, low white building that steps down a garden slope towards the water, and it is known for Danish design above all: a large collection of chairs, often described as one of the biggest in Scandinavia, plus Danish ceramics, textiles, glass and twentieth-century Danish painting and sculpture. In the park stands Arne Jacobsen's Kubeflex, an experimental modular summer house of cubes from around 1970 that is said to be the prototype of a system never put into production, moved here and shown as it was. Changing exhibitions on fashion, design and contemporary art draw Danish visitors. People come for design, a fjord view and a good cafe. The honest caveat: this is a medium-sized regional museum, strongest for design lovers; if chairs and ceramics leave you cold, Koldinghus castle in town may suit you better.
