Trapp Family Lodge
Ski Resort · Stowe, Vermont
An Austrian-style lodge on a hillside above Stowe, on land the von Trapp family bought in 1942 after leaving Austria - the family The Sound of Music was written about, which is why a Vermont hillside is a name recognised in countries that could not place Vermont on a map. What the film does not cover is the more interesting part: in 1968 Johannes von Trapp opened the first commercial cross-country ski centre in the United States here, and the network he started now runs to tens of miles of groomed trail and a great deal more backcountry across a couple of thousand acres of mountainside. There is a brewery making Austrian lagers at the bottom of it.

Open YEAR ROUND as a working resort, and ⚠ OPEN TO DAY VISITORS AS WELL AS GUESTS - you do not have to stay here to use it. A NORDIC TRAIL PASS is bought on the day at the Outdoor Center in winter, summer trail access for walking and biking works the same way, and the VON TRAPP BREWING BIERHALL AND THE BAKERY are open to the public with no trail pass needed. Free parking on site. Rentals and lessons are available and worth arranging ahead in peak weeks. ⚠ LODGING IS A SEPARATE RESORT BOOKING and should be made months ahead for peak winter and foliage weeks; nothing is bundled, so each element is paid for on its own. ⚠ TRAPP HILL ROAD CLIMBS STEEPLY from Stowe village - it is ploughed and maintained, but winter tyres or all-wheel drive are the sensible minimum after snow. April into early June is mud season, when the trails are poor.
