Trento
Historic Centre Of Trento, Seat Of The Council Of Trent From 1545, With The Castello Del Buonconsiglio And The Torre Aquila Cycle Of The Months · Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige
Trento spent the middle of the sixteenth century hosting the council that wrote the Catholic answer to the Reformation, on and off for eighteen years, and the town has been quietly living off that ever since. The sessions were held in a church you can still walk into, and the bishops who ran the place built themselves a castle with a frescoed loggia and a cycle of the months painted around 1400 that is one of the best surviving pictures of medieval daily life anywhere. The centre is small, alpine and painted: facades frescoed in the sixteenth century, a Romanesque cathedral on a square with a Neptune fountain, and mountains closing the view at the end of every street. Above the town a cable car crosses the valley in four minutes to a plateau of walking country, and out on the edge is a Renzo Piano science museum that is a genuinely good building. The Dolomites start half an hour east and almost nobody stops here on the way to them.
