Trevi Fountain

Monumento Storico Di Roma Capitale; Within The UNESCO Historic Centre Of Rome (1980) · Rome, Lazio

Rome's largest Baroque fountain, filling the whole end wall of the Palazzo Poli, where water from the Aqua Virgo aqueduct of 19 BC still arrives after two thousand years. Nicola Salvi won the competition set by Pope Clement XII in 1732; he died in 1751 and Giuseppe Pannini finished the work in 1762, with Pietro Bracci's Oceanus riding a shell chariot between figures of Abundance and Health. It stands about 26 metres high and 49 metres wide, wedged into a small piazza that was never built for the crowd that now arrives, which is why since February 2026 the lower basin level is fenced, capped at roughly 400 people at a time and costs 2 euros to enter during the day. The coins thrown over the shoulder, between 1.5 and 2 million euros a year, are swept out on Monday and Friday mornings and go to the Caritas charity. The upper street level stays free and open around the clock, and before ticket hours begin the basin barriers are open as well.
