Trinidad State Beach
State Park · Trinidad, California
Trinidad State Beach lies on the Humboldt County coast at the small town of Trinidad, just off Highway 101 about 20 miles north of Arcata. It is a pocket beach tucked beside Trinidad Head, a rocky headland with a lighthouse replica on top - confirm - and a harbour and pier on the other side. The setting is classic North Coast: sea stacks, driftwood, forested bluffs and fog. The water is cold and rough and sneaker waves are a real hazard, so this is a beach for walking, beachcombing and tide pools at low tide rather than swimming. Whale watching from the Head is popular in migration seasons, and the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse - confirm - stands in town. Sue-meg State Park (Patrick's Point) lies a few miles north, and the redwood parks lie farther up Highway 101. It suits walkers, photographers and families who like moody coastal weather, and it is a poor pick for a warm sunbathing day or a swim.

California State Parks has generally run Trinidad State Beach as a day-use area from around sunrise to sunset, with access by trail from a small lot and from nearby town streets - confirm the current hours, parking locations and whether any fee applies. Fog is common in summer, rain is heavy from late autumn through spring, and winter storms bring big surf, driftwood and trail closures. Parts of the headland and the beach access can be closed after slides or washouts, so check the State Parks page and local alerts on the day you go. The Trinidad Head trail has its own conditions - confirm.
