Red Laterite Pinnacles Carved By Rain Into A Canyon Of Ochre, Pink And Cream Spires; A Short, Easily Walked Day Trip From Antsiranana And A Different Kind Of Tsingy To The Grey Limestone Of Bemaraha And Ankarana · Antsiranana, Diana

The Tsingy Rouge, or Red Tsingy, are a field of eroded red laterite pinnacles in the Irodo valley, roughly 65 km south of Antsiranana in the far north. Unlike the grey limestone tsingy of Bemaraha or Ankarana, these formations are soft, rain-carved earth in shades of ochre, rust, pink and cream, standing in a shallow canyon that opens off a dry riverbed. The spires, ridges and cones were shaped by seasonal water over a long period, and the colours change with the light, strongest in the morning and late afternoon. The walk is short and fairly flat, mostly along the canyon floor and up a few easy slopes, so most visitors spend about one to two hours here. Access is the hard part: a rough 4x4 track leaves the main road and crosses dry streambeds, and a local community association supplies guides and collects the entry fee. It is photogenic rather than dramatic, and feels crowded when tour groups arrive.

Irodo valley about 65 km south of Antsiranana, reached by 4x4 track off Route Nationale 6, Antsiranana, Diana, Madagascar

The site is a natural valley with no gate, but visits go through the local community association guide, who usually works daylight hours, roughly from morning to late afternoon. Entry is NOT free and a small fee is collected on the spot, so confirm the current price. The track is CLOSED or impassable in heavy rain, mostly in the wet season from about December to March, and the formations are more fragile then. Dry season visits from about May to November are easiest. Times are not fixed, so confirm locally.
