Tsitsikamma and Storms River
The Marine Section Of The Garden Route National Park And One Of Africa'S Oldest Marine Protected Areas, Where Indigenous Forest Comes Down To A Rocky Coast And Three Suspension Bridges Cross The Storms River Mouth The Start Of The Otter Trail, Which Books Up Roughly A Year Ahead, And A Few Kilometres From The Bloukrans Bridge Bungee · Storms River, Eastern Cape
The Storms River comes out of a gorge in indigenous forest and meets the sea in a narrow rocky inlet, and three suspension bridges swing across the mouth of it a few metres above the water. That short walk from the rest camp to the bridges is one of the most photographed things in South Africa and it deserves to be. Tsitsikamma is the marine section of the Garden Route National Park and among the oldest marine protected areas in Africa, which means the forest comes down to the rocks uncut and the sea in front of it has been left alone for sixty years. The Otter Trail starts here - five days along the coast, the most sought-after hiking permit in the country, and it books roughly a year ahead. A few kilometres west, people throw themselves off the Bloukrans bridge on a rubber cord. It is a strange and excellent stretch of coast, and the suspension bridges are only the first ten minutes of it.

GATE HOURS ARE ROUGHLY DAYLIGHT with a conservation fee per person a day, and overnight guests in the rest camp come and go. THE OTTER TRAIL BOOKS ROUGHLY A YEAR AHEAD, takes twelve people a day and is a serious five-day hike with river crossings timed to the tide - this is not a walk-in. Shorter day trails leave from the camp. The BLOUKRANS BUNGEE is a separate commercial operation on the N2 road bridge with its own hours and price. There is a restaurant, a shop and fuel nearby at Storms River village. MALARIA-FREE.
