Tucson Mountain Park and Gates Pass

Pima County Natural Resources, Parks And Recreation · Tucson, Arizona

A Pima County park of about 20,000 acres in the Tucson Mountains west of the city, covering saguaro forest, rocky ridges and more than 60 miles of trails. It surrounds the road through Gates Pass, built in the 1880s by Thomas Gates, where a small stone shelter and overlook face west across the Avra Valley. Sunset at Gates Pass, with saguaros silhouetted against the sky, is one of Tucson's classic views, and the lot fills early in winter. The park adjoins the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park's western district, and Gilbert Ray Campground offers RV and tent sites. Gates Pass Road is narrow and winding, and longer vehicles are not permitted over the pass. Entry is free.
