Tumacácori National Historical Park
National Historical Park · Tumacacori, Arizona
The ruins of Spanish colonial missions in the Santa Cruz River valley south of Tucson, centred on the adobe church of San José de Tumacácori, begun around 1800 and never completely finished, and abandoned in 1848. The mission community was founded among the O'odham in 1691 by the Jesuit Eusebio Francisco Kino. The park also protects the older mission ruins of Guevavi and Calabazas, visited on scheduled tours. A museum, a walled garden, a cemetery and mortuary chapel surround the church, and a river trail follows the Juan Bautista de Anza route 4.5 miles to Tubac. It is an easy stop on Interstate 19 south of Tucson.
