Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

A Semicircular Curtain Of Falls Roughly 120 Metres High Spread Across A Cliff Amphitheatre Below Mount Semeru; The Name Means A Thousand Waterfalls · Lumajang, East Java

TUMPAK SEWU MEANS A THOUSAND WATERFALLS and for once the name is not an exaggeration - water comes over a semicircular cliff about ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY METRES HIGH in dozens of separate streams at once, forming a curtain across an amphitheatre of rock with MOUNT SEMERU, THE HIGHEST VOLCANO IN JAVA, smoking behind it. There are two ways to see it and they are completely different experiences. THE PANORAMA VIEWPOINT above is a five-minute walk from the car park and gives the photograph. THE DESCENT TO THE BASE IS SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY: a steep scramble down bamboo ladders, wet rock and fixed ropes, then a wade up the river gorge. PEOPLE HAVE DIED DOING IT. In 2021 Semeru's eruption sent lahars down these valleys, which is a reminder of what the river at the bottom of this gorge actually is - not scenery, but the drain of an active volcano, and capable of rising faster than anyone in it can climb out.

Sidomulyo, Pronojiwo, Lumajang Regency, East Java, Lumajang, East Java, Indonesia

OPEN IN DAYLIGHT with a small entry fee collected locally - THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE ENTRANCES charging separately, one for the PANORAMA VIEWPOINT on the rim and one for the DESCENT TO THE BASE, and they are not the same place. THE DESCENT IS CLOSED WHEN WATER LEVELS ARE HIGH and should be treated as closed in heavy rain whatever the gate says. GUIDES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM ENTRANCE and are strongly worth taking - the route changes as the river moves. GO EARLY: the gorge is in shade and the light is best in the morning, and afternoon rain is normal in most months. THE AREA SITS BELOW MOUNT SEMERU, WHICH IS ACTIVE - the 2021 eruption sent lahars down these valleys and access has been suspended after eruptions. Goa Tetes cave is on the same descent.
