Turlock Lake State Recreation Area

State Park · La Grange, California

Turlock Lake State Recreation Area is a reservoir park in Stanislaus County, in the low foothills east of the Central Valley near La Grange and Waterford. The lake is fed by the Tuolumne River and is roughly 3,500 acres when full, which makes it a real boating lake rather than a pond. People come for powerboating, water skiing, bass fishing, swimming and camping - confirm the facilities now. The setting is dry rolling hills, oaks and grass, not alpine, and the Sierra views are distant. Summers are hot, often above 100 F, and the lake level drops through the season, which changes ramps, beaches and hazards. It is busiest on hot summer weekends and quiet in the off season. Modesto is about 30 minutes away - confirm. Do not confuse it with Tuolumne River Regional Park in Modesto, which is a different place. Expect a State Parks day-use fee, which you should confirm, and bring your own supplies.

California State Parks reservoir units commonly open early and close late in the warm season, with the gates often opening very early and closing late in the evening - confirm the current hours and any seasonal gate schedule posted at the entrance. Camping uses the usual afternoon check-in and late-morning check-out. The boat ramp is normally open in daylight but can become unusable when the lake drops, and the swimming areas, if offered, are typically open only in warm months. Summer weekends start early because boaters want to launch before the heat and wind build. Algae notices, low water and wildfire smoke can change what is open, so check the day you travel. Winter is quiet and cool.
