Tuzigoot National Monument

National Monument · Clarkdale, Arizona

A Sinagua hilltop pueblo of about a hundred rooms built between roughly 1000 and 1400 CE on a limestone ridge above the Verde River, near Clarkdale and in sight of the mining town of Jerome. Excavated in the 1930s and made a national monument in 1939, it has a short loop trail up to the top of the pueblo, a museum of Sinagua pottery and tools, and a trail overlooking Tavasci Marsh, a rare freshwater marsh full of birds. The Sinagua farmed the river valley and traded widely across the region, and the museum displays their pottery, tools and ornaments. The monument trail is short enough to combine with Jerome, Clarkdale and the Verde Canyon Railroad in a single day.
