Tweedsmuir Provincial Park
The Largest Provincial Park In British Columbia At About 9,810 Square Kilometres; Contains Hunlen Falls, One Of The Highest Free Falling Waterfalls In Canada At Roughly 260 Metres, And The Rainbow Range Of Mineral Stained Volcanic Peaks · Bella Coola, British Columbia
Tweedsmuir is THE LARGEST PROVINCIAL PARK IN BRITISH COLUMBIA - about nine thousand eight hundred square kilometres straddling the Coast Mountains between the Chilcotin Plateau and the Bella Coola valley, named for a Governor General who flew over it in 1937 and was suitably impressed. HUNLEN FALLS drops roughly two hundred and sixty metres in a single free fall out of Turner Lake, which makes it one of the highest uninterrupted waterfalls in Canada, and reaching it means a sixteen-kilometre walk or a float plane. The RAINBOW RANGE is the other signature: volcanic peaks stained red, orange, yellow and purple by mineral oxidation, unlike anything else in the province. Highway 20 crosses the park's northern section and drops off the plateau into the Bella Coola valley down THE HILL, an eighteen-percent gravel descent with switchbacks that has its own reputation among drivers.
Highway 20 between Anahim Lake and Bella Coola, Chilcotin, Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada
THE PARK IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND BUT THE USABLE SEASON IS ROUGHLY JUNE TO EARLY OCTOBER, bounded by snow on the trails and passes. HIGHWAY 20 CROSSES THE NORTHERN SECTION and is open all year, including THE HILL - the eighteen-percent gravel descent into the Bella Coola valley, with switchbacks and no guardrail in places. CHECK CONDITIONS AND DO NOT ATTEMPT IT TOWING ANYTHING YOU CANNOT STOP. Roadside campgrounds along Highway 20 are first-come and seasonal. HUNLEN FALLS IS REACHED BY A 16KM TRAIL FROM THE ATNARKO TRAILHEAD or by float plane to Turner Lake; the Turner Lake canoe circuit has rental boats cached at the lake, booked through BC Parks. BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING REQUIRES REGISTRATION. THIS IS SERIOUS GRIZZLY COUNTRY and the Atnarko salmon run concentrates bears in autumn.
