Twillingate and Iceberg Alley

Town Of Twillingate · Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador

Twillingate is a fishing town on two linked islands in Notre Dame Bay, joined to the Newfoundland mainland by causeways, and it is the best-known base on the north-east coast for watching icebergs. Bergs that break off Greenland glaciers drift down Iceberg Alley and often ground in the bays and headlands here in spring, roughly late April to June, though numbers vary widely from year to year and nothing is guaranteed. Several operators run boat tours, and humpback whales and puffins add to the show in summer. Long Point Lighthouse sits on a headland with free views, and the town keeps a museum and painted fishing houses. It suits travellers who want a long road trip, wildlife and quiet coast. It is far from anywhere, fog can cancel tours, and cabins are costly and full at iceberg peak. Allow two or three days, and plan the drive in daylight because moose use these roads. Fogo Island is a separate place with its own entry, reached by ferry.

The islands are a living town and are always accessible, but visitor services are seasonal and nothing here is verified, so confirm everything. Most boat tours, restaurants, the museum and cabins run from about late spring to early autumn, with some opening only in iceberg season or in summer. Boat tours leave on set trips that depend on wind, swell and fog, and a tour can be cancelled at short notice. Long Point Lighthouse and the headland paths can be visited in daylight, with the best light early or late. Outside the main season many places close, so book lodging and tours ahead and check with the operator the day before you travel.
