Tybee Island
Beach Town · Tybee Island, Georgia
Savannah's beach, eighteen miles east at the mouth of the river, and a deliberately unpolished barrier island of low-rise cottages, fish shacks and a wooden pier. The Tybee Island Light Station has stood on this spot in one form or another since the 1730s and the present tower is among the oldest and tallest in America, still active, and open to climb. The island is small enough to cycle end to end and the whole thing runs on day-trippers from Savannah, which is why parking is the local sport and the local grievance.
