U.S. National Whitewater Center
River · Charlotte, North Carolina
A thirteen-hundred-acre outdoor centre on the Catawba River outside Charlotte, built around the world's largest and most complex recirculating artificial whitewater river - twelve million gallons pumped continuously through thirty-seven hundred and fifty feet of channel, split between an Olympic-standard slalom course and a longer wilderness channel. It opened in 2006 as a not-for-profit training facility and became, almost by accident, the outdoor centre of gravity for a city of a million people.
