Uluguru Mountains

The Uluguru Mountains, An Ancient Eastern Arc Range Peaking At 2,646 M (Lukwangule), With Endemic Species Such As The Uluguru Bushshrike And Uluguru Violet, Luguru Terraced Farming Villages And The Morningside Viewpoint. Weekend Hikes From Morogoro On Guided Trails, Plus The Bunduki Forest And Choma Falls. · Morogoro, Morogoro

The Uluguru Mountains rise like a green wall behind Morogoro town, about 190 km and 3 hours by road from Dar es Salaam. They belong to the ancient Eastern Arc range, and the top, the Lukwangule Plateau at about 2,646 m, holds forest with many species found nowhere else, among them the Uluguru bushshrike and the wild violet that gave the world the African violet. On the slopes the Luguru people farm steep terraces and trace descent through the mother's line. The honest picture: this is a weekend hike for people from Dar es Salaam, not a destination that justifies a flight. Trails are rough, local guides are needed, tourist facilities are few, and the views are good rather than famous. Cooler air and quiet villages are the reward. Another hill town in the region would make a fair substitute, so come if you already like walking, or if you are passing through Morogoro and have a day to fill with a proper climb. Bring a guide, a warm layer and patience for the rough road, and plan to be back in town before dark, because the paths and the village lanes are poorly lit.

The mountains are open at all times, and there is no gate on the village paths. Walk in DAYLIGHT only and start early. Reserve and forest areas may ask for a permit and a guide. Paths can be CLOSED or unsafe after heavy rain. Confirm access with a local guide.
