Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site

Historic House · Galena, Illinois

The Italianate brick house that the citizens of Galena presented to Ulysses S. Grant in August 1865 when he came home from the war — he had left the town four years earlier as a failed businessman working in his father's leather goods shop. He ran his 1868 presidential campaign from its front porch. Around ninety per cent of the furnishings inside are the Grant family's own, which is an unusually high proportion for a presidential house.
