Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site

Historic House · St. Louis, Missouri

White Haven, the estate ten miles south-west of downtown St. Louis where Ulysses S. Grant courted and married Julia Dent and where the couple lived on and off for years before the Civil War. It was her family's slaveholding farm, and the site does not avoid that - the story it tells is of a man who freed the one man he owned in 1859 when he could have sold him for money he badly needed, married into a slaveholding family, and went on to command the army that ended slavery. Five historic structures survive on nine and a half acres.

7400 Grant Road, St. Louis, Missouri, 63123, United States
