The Umeda Sky Building is a pair of towers in north Osaka, about 173 m tall and roughly 40 storeys each - confirm - joined at the top by a ring-shaped structure called the Floating Garden Observatory. It opened in 1993 and was designed by Hiroshi Hara - confirm. The building is known less for its offices than for how you reach the top: a glass tube escalator carries you across the open void between the towers, which is thrilling or alarming depending on your head for heights. At the top is an indoor gallery and an open-air deck, called Kuchu Teien, with a ring of walkways, where the night view over the Yodo River and the lit city is the draw. In the basement, a retro food alley called Takimi-koji recreates an old Showa street with small restaurants. It suits a one- to two-hour stop at dusk and is a good Osaka night view, though it is windy on the open deck and costs more than the free viewpoints in the city. It is a short walk from Osaka Station by an underground passage, and Osaka has its own separate entry in this guide.
