Ciudad Universitaria is the main campus of the National Autonomous University, built in the early 1950s on a lava field in the south of Mexico City and inscribed by UNESCO in 2007. It is the best place in the country to see how architects, painters and engineers of one generation tried to build a modern Mexico. The Central Library is wrapped in Juan O'Gorman's huge stone mosaic, the Rectorate carries a Siqueiros mural, and the Olympic Stadium has a Diego Rivera relief over its entrance. Beyond the buildings are the Espacio Escultorico, a ring of concrete prisms in black volcanic rock, the Pedregal ecological reserve, the MUAC contemporary art museum, the Universum science museum and a botanical garden. The open campus is free to walk, but it is very large, so plan on a shuttle or bike rather than walking everything. It suits architecture and art lovers, families with older children and anyone who wants a calm green day away from the crowded centre. Coyoacan and the Frida Kahlo Museum are nearby but are separate visits.
Ciudad Universitaria, the main campus of the National Autonomous University (UNAM) on Insurgentes Sur in the south of Mexico City, reached from Metro Copilco or Universidad; coordinates approximate, Coyoacan, Ciudad de México, Mexico
The open campus, its plazas and the outsides of the Central Library, Rectorate and Olympic Stadium are FREE to walk in daylight, and most paths stay open into the evening. The Central Library houses stacks and reading rooms, so the interior is limited and you view the mosaic from outside. The Espacio Escultorico and the Pedregal reserve usually open on morning hours and may be CLOSED on some days or after rain, so confirm. MUAC, Universum and the Botanical Garden have separate tickets, short daytime hours and usually close one or two days a week, often Monday. Match days at the stadium change access. Hours shift in vacation weeks, so confirm each site before you go.
