Union Station Kansas City
Historic Site · Kansas City, Missouri
A 1914 Beaux-Arts railway station that handled more than 670,000 passengers at its 1945 peak, fell into near-ruin as rail travel collapsed, and was saved by a 1996 bi-state public vote - the first time voters in two states had ever taxed themselves jointly for a civic project. It reopened in 1999 as a mix of science centre, theatre, restaurants and a still-working Amtrak stop. The Grand Hall is the reason to walk in: ninety-five feet to the ceiling, with three chandeliers weighing three and a half thousand pounds each.
30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri, 64108, United States
The building is open daily and FREE to walk into, generally from mid-morning to evening with the restaurants running later. Science City, the planetarium, the theatre and the touring exhibitions inside are separately ticketed and keep their own hours. Amtrak still serves the station and that portion operates on the train schedule. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
