United States Marshals Museum

The National Museum Of The United States Marshals Service, The Oldest Federal Law Enforcement Agency In The Country, Founded 1789. Opened On The Fort Smith Riverfront In July 2023. · Fort Smith, Arkansas

The Marshals Service was created in 1789, which makes it the oldest federal law enforcement agency in the United States, and its national museum opened on the Fort Smith riverfront in 2023 after a long fundraising campaign. Fort Smith got it because of Judge Parker's court a few hundred yards away: the deputy marshals who rode out of here into Indian Territory are the most storied chapter the service has. The galleries run from the frontier through witness protection, fugitive operations and the desegregation escorts of the 1950s and 1960s, and the Hall of Honour names the marshals killed in the line of duty. It is new, well funded and deliberately not a hagiography.
