Unity Temple

Church · Oak Park, Illinois

Frank Lloyd Wright's Unitarian church in Oak Park, built between 1905 and 1908 after the congregation's previous building burned and the budget allowed only forty-five thousand dollars. Wright's answer was poured reinforced concrete left exposed — the first monumental public building in America built that way — arranged as a windowless cube lit entirely from above through amber skylights. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is still an active congregation.
