University of Alaska Museum of the North

University Of Alaska Fairbanks Museum And Research Collection · Fairbanks, Alaska

A museum on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus whose sweeping white building, inspired by glaciers and the aurora, overlooks the Tanana Valley and the Alaska Range. It is both a public museum and a research collection of millions of specimens and objects. The Gallery of Alaska tours the state's regions, from dinosaur fossils and mammoth tusks to Alaska Native clothing, tools and art, and it holds Blue Babe, a 36,000-year-old steppe bison found frozen in a Fairbanks gold mine in 1979. The Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery spans 2,000 years of art. The Place Where You Go to Listen turns live data about earthquakes, daylight, the Moon and the aurora into shifting sound and light. In 2026 the museum opened daily 9 AM-7 PM in summer and 9 AM-5:30 PM in winter.
