University of Notre Dame

Historic District · Notre Dame, Indiana

A Catholic university founded in 1842 north of South Bend, whose campus is one of the most visited in the United States and is open to the public without a ticket. The gold-leafed Main Building dome, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart with its Luigi Gregori murals, the Grotto modelled on Lourdes, and the Hesburgh Library mural universally known as Touchdown Jesus sit within a few minutes' walk of one another. Notre Dame football has been broadcast nationally by NBC since 1991, which is why a great many first-time visitors arrive knowing the stadium and nothing else on the campus.

Notre Dame Avenue, Notre Dame, Indiana, 46556, United States

The campus and grounds are open daily and free. The Basilica is open to visitors outside service times; the Grotto is open at all hours. The Eck Visitors Center keeps daytime hours and runs free walking tours on a published schedule. Home football Saturdays operate under entirely different access and parking rules.
