Upper and Lower Table Rock
Rock Formation · Central Point, Oregon
Two flat-topped volcanic mesas standing about 800 ft above the Rogue Valley north of Medford, cut from a single andesite lava flow roughly seven million years ago and left standing while the softer ground around them eroded away. The tops carry vernal pools that fill in winter and dry by summer, and with them a dwarf woolly meadowfoam that grows nowhere else on Earth. The 1853 treaty that created the Table Rock Reservation was signed at their foot. The Nature Conservancy owns 3,591 acres and the Bureau of Land Management the rest.
Table Rock Road, Central Point, Oregon, 97502, United States
Both trails are open daily, dawn to dusk, year round, and are free. There are no facilities and no water at either trailhead. ⚠ THE VERNAL POOLS ON THE SUMMITS HOLD WATER ONLY FROM ABOUT DECEMBER TO MAY and are dry by midsummer, and the endemic dwarf woolly meadowfoam flowers in spring - a summer visit is the same climb without the reason for it. Rogue Valley summer temperatures regularly exceed 95F on trails with no shade and no water. The Nature Conservancy and the BLM run free guided walks in spring.
