Upper Whitewater Falls

Waterfall · Asheville, North Carolina

A four-hundred-and-eleven-foot plunge on the Whitewater River in the far south-west of the state, close to the South Carolina line - one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States by the Forest Service's own account. A short paved path from the car park reaches an overlook that takes in the whole drop, and a long stairway continues down toward the river for anyone who wants the base. The river crosses into South Carolina and falls again below.

160 Zillicoa Street, Asheville, North Carolina, 28801, United States

Open daily, dawn to dusk, year round, in Nantahala National Forest. ⚠ THERE IS A PARKING FEE at the developed overlook car park - small, and unusual for a national forest site in North Carolina. The access road off NC 281 can close for ice and storm damage. ⚠ THE ADMINISTRATIVE ADDRESS IS THE SHARED NORTH CAROLINA FORESTS HEADQUARTERS IN ASHEVILLE, about three hours away; the falls are in Jackson County.
