Urfa Castle

A Fortress On A High Ridge Above The City With Two Tall Roman Columns Known As The Throne Of Nimrod, A Moat, Towers And Views Over The Pool Of Abraham And The Mosque Of Halil Ur Rahman. A Short Climb That Links To The City'S Religious Sites · Eyyubiye, Sanliurfa

Urfa Castle stands on a long rocky ridge above the old centre of Sanliurfa, in the south-east of Turkiye, and is the best viewpoint over the pools and mosques that make the city a pilgrimage place. The most visible features are two tall Roman-style columns on the crest, known locally as the Throne of Nimrod, which are often dated to the first centuries AD (confirm), while the walls, towers and a deep rock-cut moat belong to later Byzantine, Islamic and crusader-period work (confirm the layers). A stair climbs from the park at the foot to the ridge, and from the top the view takes in the green Pool of Abraham at Balikligol, the Halil-ur-Rahman Mosque, the Rizvaniye Mosque, red-tiled roofs and the brown plain beyond. Sanliurfa is known for its kebab, its hot pepper and its warm hospitality, and it is hot in summer. The climb is short but steep, and most visitors need about 60 to 90 minutes for the castle, more when it is joined with the pools below.

The castle area is normally open daily from about 08:00 until sunset, with a gate ticket where charged and an earlier closing in winter (confirm). The stair and the ridge can be closed in bad weather or for repairs, and the park at the foot stays open later in the evening. The pools and mosques below keep their own hours, with the mosques closed to visitors at prayer times and on Friday around midday. Cafes and kebab houses in the old centre open from about 08:00 and many stay open until late evening in summer. Ramadan and holidays change the pattern, so confirm before a special trip.
