USS Kidd Veterans Museum
National Historic Landmark · Baton Rouge, Louisiana
A Fletcher-class destroyer moored on the Mississippi at downtown Baton Rouge, and THE ONLY SURVIVING US DESTROYER RESTORED TO HER 1945 CONFIGURATION — no post-war modernisation, no added superstructure, the ship as she was when a kamikaze hit her off Okinawa and killed thirty-eight of her crew. She sits in a cradle that the river floods and refloats with the season, which means for part of the year you walk aboard on a ramp and for part of the year she is afloat. The museum ashore holds aircraft, models and a veterans' memorial.
305 South River Road, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70802, United States
Open most days with holiday closures; modest admission covering both the ship and the shore museum, with reductions for children, seniors, students, military and veterans. No booking needed for individuals. Free parking on River Road. CHECK BEFORE TRAVELLING IN HIGH WATER — the ship floats and grounds in her cradle with the Mississippi, access arrangements change with the river stage, and major floods have closed parts of the site. Overnight youth programmes book months ahead.
