Uwharrie National Forest
National Forest · Asheville, North Carolina
The smallest of North Carolina's four national forests at fifty thousand acres, in the Uwharrie Mountains of the central Piedmont - a range so old it has been worn down to hills of five or six hundred feet, and which geologists reckon among the oldest in North America. It is the closest national forest to Charlotte, Greensboro and the Triangle alike, and it is where the Piedmont goes to camp, ride and pan for gold.
