Val-Jalbert is an abandoned pulp-mill village on the Ouiatchouan River near Chambord, on the south-west shore of Lac Saint-Jean, about 270 km north of Quebec City. Damase Boulianne and the Quebec Pulp Company built it from 1901 around a mill beside a 72 m waterfall, higher than Niagara Falls, and by the 1920s it had a school, a convent, shops and workers' houses with electricity and running water. When the mill closed in 1927 the families left, and the village stood empty for decades before becoming a heritage site. Today costumed guides play villagers, the general store, the convent and the mill ruins can be explored, and a cable car carries visitors to the top of the falls (confirm). The season runs roughly May to October, and the Lac Saint-Jean region adds blueberry pies and a long, flat bike path. Expect a half day on foot, and check opening dates and the cable car status before you drive.

The village is commonly open from about mid-May to mid-October, with the busiest daily hours in July and August and shorter hours in spring and autumn, so confirm opening dates and daily times on the official site before driving. The cable car, costumed guides, shops and restaurant follow the same season, and some activities run only on certain days. Outside the season the site is closed to the public. The surrounding roads, Lac Saint-Jean shore and nearby bike path are free and open at any time, and the mill ruins and falls are best seen within opening hours.
