Valkenburg and its Caves
Hill Town Of Marl Caves, The Only Hilltop Castle Ruin In The Country, And Underground Christmas Markets (13 November 30 December In 2026) · Valkenburg, Limburg
Valkenburg aan de Geul is a small, busy resort town in the hills of South Limburg, about 15 minutes by train from Maastricht, built on and into soft yellow marl stone. For centuries people cut building blocks out of the hills, leaving kilometres of tunnels that now form the town's caves: the Gemeentegrot, visited by a little train or on foot past charcoal drawings and carvings, and the Fluweelengrot, linked by passages to the ruin of the only hilltop castle in the Netherlands. People come for the caves, the castle ruin, the chairlift up to the Wilhelmina Tower, walks in the Geul valley, and, in November and December, the underground Christmas markets that pack the caves with stalls. It feels unlike the rest of the country: hills, half-timbered farms and a Belgian-German mood. The honest caveats: the caves are old quarries, not natural caverns; the main street is touristy; and Christmas weekends are extremely crowded.
