Valle de Guadalupe

Ruta Del Vino / Valle VitiviníCola · Ensenada, Baja California

Mexico makes wine, and most of it comes from this valley: a dry granite bowl roughly thirty minutes inland from Ensenada, with a Mediterranean climate and little water to spare. Russian Molokan refugees, a pacifist sect fleeing conscription, settled it in 1905, and their cemetery and community museum survive. The wine followed, and then the food: this is where Baja Med cooking took shape, and several of the best restaurants in Mexico are open-air kitchens on dirt roads between vineyards. Wineries range from large estates to garage producers and some bold modern buildings, one built from upturned boat hulls. Prices are closer to California than to Mexico City, partly because the border is about ninety minutes away and weekends fill with visitors from San Diego. There is no public transport, the side roads are unpaved, and you should not drive yourself between tastings. Book wineries and lunch ahead, sleep in the valley or Ensenada, and check Baja California travel advice.
