Valley Forge National Historical Park

National Historical Park · King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

The ground where the Continental Army spent the winter of 1777 to 1778, eighteen miles from a Philadelphia held by the British. No battle was fought here: roughly two thousand men died of disease and exposure in six months, and the army that marched out in June was drilled, reorganised and for the first time recognisably professional. The park is now some 3,500 acres of open field and woodland west of Philadelphia, free to enter, with reconstructed huts, the stone house Washington used as his headquarters, and a five-mile paved loop that most of the surrounding suburbs treat as their local park.

1400 North Outer Line Drive, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, 19406, United States

Park grounds open daily, generally 7 AM to dusk, free. Visitor centre generally 9 AM to 5 PM. Washington's Headquarters is open on a shorter daily schedule and closes earlier than the grounds. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
