San Juan County Road 242, Mexican Hat, Utah, United States
FREE — Bureau of Land Management public land with no entrance fee and NO SERVICES OF ANY KIND: no water, no toilets, no ranger and effectively no mobile coverage. Free dispersed camping is permitted at previously disturbed sites, but ⚠ CAMPFIRES ARE PROHIBITED. The route is a seventeen-mile gravel loop, San Juan County Road 242, between US-163 near Mexican Hat and Utah State Route 261 at the foot of the Moki Dugway. ⚠ IT IS PASSABLE BY ORDINARY NON-FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES IN DRY WEATHER — its own sources say so — BUT THAT CHANGES COMPLETELY WHEN WET, when high clearance and four-wheel drive become necessary and washes must be crossed. There is no maintenance on demand and no recovery service; check the forecast and turn back if it starts raining. Fuel and supply at Mexican Hat or Bluff first.
