Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site
Historic Site · Vandalia, Illinois
The oldest surviving Illinois statehouse, built in 1836 when Vandalia was the state capital, and the building in which Abraham Lincoln served his first terms in the legislature. It was here that he and the other Sangamon County representatives — the Long Nine — manoeuvred the capital away from Vandalia and up to Springfield, which is the reason this building is a museum and not still in use.
