Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site

Historic House · West Columbia, Texas

A sugar plantation on Varner Creek near West Columbia, worked by enslaved people from the 1820s, bought in 1901 by Governor Jim Hogg, and given to the state by his daughter Ima along with the collection she filled it with. Oil was found under the land in 1918, which is where the money for Bayou Bend came from.

⚠ HOURS, TOUR TIMES AND ADMISSION ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them. Check thc.texas.gov before travelling; THC sites commonly close one or two days a week and this is an hour from Houston. ⚠ TAKE THE GUIDED TOUR IF ONE IS RUNNING — the interpretation has been reworked to centre the enslaved people who worked this sugar plantation, and that account is carried by the guides rather than by the furniture. Check for Juneteenth programming in June.
