Vedauwoo Recreation Area

Medicine Bow National Forest Recreation Area · Laramie, Wyoming

A jumble of weathered pink granite towers, fins and boulders in the Medicine Bow National Forest between Cheyenne and Laramie, about a mile off Interstate 80. The name is usually traced to an Arapaho word meaning earth-born. Climbers know it far beyond Wyoming for its off-width cracks — wide, awkward, strenuous climbs that are graded stiffly — while hikers loop Turtle Rock past beaver ponds and aspen. It has a campground and picnic areas and gets busy on summer weekends with climbers from Colorado. The name is usually said VEE-da-voo. It sits in the Pole Mountain area of the forest, and the granite is Sherman Granite, about 1.4 billion years old.

Vedauwoo Road, off Interstate 80 exit 329, Laramie, Wyoming, 82070, United States
