A city of 118 islands, 400 bridges and no cars, built on oak piles in a lagoon and run for a thousand years as a maritime republic, whose centre has barely changed shape since the 1500s: Piazza San Marco with its Byzantine basilica of golden mosaics and looted bronze horses, the Doge's Palace next door, the Campanile, the Rialto bridge over the Grand Canal, and behind them a maze of alleys and small squares where the 50,000 people who still live here outnumbered by tourist beds since 2024. It is the most visited small city on earth, with about six million arrivals a year and peaks above 100,000 people a day, and it now defends itself with rules: a day-tripper access fee on the busiest spring and summer dates, a 25-person cap on tour groups, fines for sitting on the steps or eating on the ground, and a flood barrier that was raised thirty times in three winter weeks in 2026. The basilica, the palace and the vaporetto are all ticketed and all priced hard. None of it stops the first sight of the Grand Canal from the station steps being the best arrival in Europe.
