Verde Canyon Railroad

Historic 1911 Railway Line, Excursions Since 1990 · Clarkdale, Arizona

A scenic excursion railway from Clarkdale into the Verde River canyon, a place reached by no roads. The line was built in 1911 for the copper magnate William A. Clark to serve the United Verde smelter below Jerome, and passenger excursions began in 1990. The round trip of about four hours covers roughly 20 miles each way to the old Perkinsville ranch and back, past red rock cliffs, Sinagua cliff dwellings, a steel trestle and a curved 680-foot tunnel. Every passenger can use the open-air viewing cars, and in winter bald eagles nest along the river. In 2026 a coach ticket cost $139, with first class, a private caboose and a locomotive ride-along costing more. Special trains run for holidays and summer evenings.
